Produced by Sam Group and jointly created by well-known playwright Meng Bing and famous director Wang Yansong, "Man in the Mirror", the first multimedia play in description of anti-corruption in China, is now
This play does not intend to reveal but to inspire.
As the vice chairman of the China Artistic Association and a national-level scriptwriter, Meng Bing devotes his deep patriotic feelings in writing every piece of work, and strives to create literary and artistic works which could bear more social responsibility. And through well-received communication forms like drama or movie, he tends to give rise to spectators’ consideration over themselves, causes high attention and positive cognition over common social phenomenon. "Man in the Mirror" is to make deep analysis on the roles of different social status under current situation of anti-corruption. In this story, the two female leading roles both started from being excellent students to different destiny: one committed cadre of discipline inspection commission and the other is leader of municipal party committee who get lost in corruption. They have made different choices of two lifestyles, and from this contest they both get a clear picture of themselves and end up in their correct way. When it comes to the original intention of this play, scriptwriter Meng Bing states that the theme of this play is not to disclose any inside story or point to any high officials, but to analyze the official’s psychological motivation in becoming corrupted one. Meng Bing hopes that by creating the image of this corrupted official he could inspire and awake more officials to be introspective and self-disciplined, which would give this play practical significance.
Unique presentation of drama in multimedia form
Another highlight of "Man in the Mirror" is using the multimedia narrative method and a combination of virtual-real synthesis method. Multimedia is not unusual on stage, but it is used in a quite different way. Director Wang Yansong positioned this play from design period as a high-quality multimedia drama with creative design. He states that scriptwriter Meng Bing offered the major creation department with high standard novel and enormous creation space which enable us to work together for good idea of creating a special and classic realistic-theme play. The name of this play "Man in the Mirror" reveals that the inner dialogue of leading role in this play is with the one in the mirror. So how can the dialogue be presented? The very important part of course of purification is through multimedia way. A mirror which can speak and reflect will be alive in stage. Therefore innovated application of multimedia make the debut of this play more expected by spectators.
"Man in the Mirror" has a top professional design team from within China for creation works including stage design, lighting, costume, prop and so on, which provide a guarantee to this play. In addition, this type of play is director Wang Yansong’s specialty. We believe that under the current trend of popularity of recreational drama and idol play, "Man in the Mirror" would be another highlight in creation of serious drama.
At present, the drama "Man in the Mirror" has entered the formal rehearsal stage, and it is expected to rehearse in June before meeting spectators. As a drama of anti-corruption theme, "Man in the Mirror" is an excellent work on stage with tight plot, clear framework and logic, and dramatic tension.
