About the Event

On 12th October, 2014, the Recitation Event for Meng Bing’s Theatrical Work, which was sponsored by the publisher of Theater, a journal of China Theater Association, and jointly sponsored by Hongxin Huiyue International Media (Beijing)Co., Ltd and Sam Film Limited Company, was held at Ba Yi Theater of the Drama Troupe under the PLA General Political Department.

Many celebrities were invited to the event, among whom there were Guo Da, Liu Jihong and Wu Junquan, the famous voice actor. Liu Hong Mei, Director of the Melodrama Department at the The Central Academy Of Dramam together with professional performers from national drama troupes, recited excerpts from Wedding and Funeral, White Deer Plain and Breakthrough, a stage play in the form of political commentary. The plays recited, which were selected from a collection of over sixty theatrical works produced by Meng Bing, were all stylistically unique, with vivid depiction of characters and profound significance. Among the audience of over 100 people, there were dramatist of both the old and young generation, theatrical critiques and keen fanciers of stage play.

According to Meng Bing, the scriptwriter and Vice President of China Theater Association, it was necessary to organize the event of this kind, for “theater is the cultural heritage left by great masters for all humanities. It can be traced back to ancient Greece over two thousand years ago, although in China, it has only a history of more than 107 years.” In order to pass the theatrical spirit on to the next generations, we should first and foremost, be respectful. The appeal of theater lies in its unique discourse and narratives occurred in a fixed time period and space as well as its ability to express the dramatists’ outlook on life through the performance. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, the great Russian dramatist, and his Chinese counterparts, like Guo Moruo, Lao She and Cao Yu, were all very fond of reciting their own works. Recitation is a means to bridge the mind gap between the text, the author and the audience. Our own voices articulate our attitude to life and theater, and such voices will rise above the noise and clamor inflicted by various forms of popular culture.

Also, Gong Xiaodong and Lou Naiming, two renowned directors, each recited excerpts from the works produced by Liu Jinyun and Li Longyun.

Finally, Meng Bing recited his latest work, the Man in the Mirror, an anti-corruption themed stage play presented by Sam Film Limited Company and directed by Wang Yansong. Arrangements have been underway for its premiere in Beijing at the end of this year. Meng Bing said that The Man in the Mirror is not a means of whistle-blowing nor a criticism of senior government officials. It is an attempt to analyze the psycho-motive of corrupted officials and to describe the mentality of the investigators during their investigation into the corruption cases.

He also commented that, joint efforts from both the dramatists and the willing parties are needed, in order to maintain the insightful and serious nature of theater, particularly at a time when all forms of cultural products are being put out on the market.

As the sponsors suggested, the recitation event will continue to go on, and hopefully more and more contemporary dramatists would join us here, reciting their own works. The theme for the next recitation event shall be: A Salute to Contemporary Chinese Dramatists
